Thin cylinder:-

The cylinder whose thickness of the wall is less than 1/10 to 1/15 of its own diameter is called as thin cylinder.

It may be noted that whenever a cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure its wall are subjected to circumferential stress or hoop stress and longitudinal stress.

So In case of thin cylinder the stresses are assumed to be uniformly distributed throughout the wall thickness.

Thick cylinder:-

The cylinder thickness of wall is greater than 1/10 to 1/15 of its own diameter is known as thick cylinder.

The thick cylinder are generally used to withstand high pressure. Sometimes even compound thick cylinder are used to with stand very high pressure or to contain chemicals under high pressure.

So the problem of thick cylinder is a somewhat complex and is solved by using Lame's theory.

Difference between thin and thick cylinder

Difference between thin cylinder and thick cylinder.

2.	The Stresses are constant in thin cylinder.	In thick cylinder stresses are maximum at inner and minimum at outer side.
3.	Thin cylinder can only Resisting the internal Pressure of the cylinder.	Thick cylinder can  Resisting  Internal and also external pressure of the cylinder.
4.	Distribution of stresses are uniform through-out the thickness of cylinder.	Distribution of stresses are not   Uniform through-out the thickness of cylinder.
5.	Stress Handling capacity is low in thin cylinder. Compare to thick cylinder.	Stress Handling capacity is more in think cylinder.
6.	Less stress sustain  capacity for thin cylinder.	More stress sustain Capacity for thick cylinder.
7.	Thin cylinders are used with- stand for low pressures Applications.	Thick cylinders are used to with- stand very high pressure Applications.
8.	The thickness of thin cylinder is less than 1/15 Of its diameter.	The thickness of thick cylinder is more than 1/15 of its diameter.
